The stock inlet is directly connected to the turbo and so immediately conducts heat as the turbo spools. Our system uses a machined flange which connects to the turbo and then a silicon coupler with an integrated thermal spacer to keep the carbon elbow from having direct contact with the turbo. We designed the shape with a continuous curvature and maximised the internal volume without affecting the airflow negatively. The inlet is finished in raw carbon so has no clear coat - which would not be able to withstand the heat generated from the turbo and exhaust manifold. The carbon construction allows us to keep the inside flow surface smooth which helps with reducing the surface friction and in turn allows airflow to move easier. We ensure strength and rigidity by maintaining a 2mm wall thickness throughout the part. Finally for added protection there is a heat reflective layer applied where the tube crosses the exhaust manifold. This reduces the radiant heat absorbed by the tube. The advantage of using carbon fiber over the traditionally used cast aluminium is mainly down to the thermal conductivity and the ability to keep the inside smooth. The flow path from the filters to the turbo inlets is very direct and does not change direction as abruptly as the usual OEM airbox designs. So instead of a complete redesign we focused on improving the OEM airbox with less restrictive flow and improved temperature efficiency. We have developed replacement drop in filters made from non-woven mesh which have a much higher flow rate as compared to the stock paper filters. To help reduce inlet air temperatures and force air into the airbox we designed large front scoops which sit behind the grills. The carbon scoops channel air into the ducts and effectively effectively de-restrict the inlet side of the airbox. The C63S engine bay reaches high temperatures with heat sources like the turbos in close proximity to the intake so it is crucial that the intake remains sealed. The final objective was met by designing an organically shaped system with custom rounded panel filters to ensure the airflow path contained no sharp corners and therefore allowed for the flow to remain laminar. The second objective was met by designing a fully sealed system. The GLC63S engine bay reaches high temperatures with heat sources like the turbos in close proximity to the intake so it is crucial that the intake remains sealed. The final objective was met by designing an organically shaped system with custom rounded panel filters to ensure the airflow path contained no sharp corners and therefore allowed for the flow to remain laminar. It fits inside the OEM ducting system and smoothly transitions to the circular filter housing shape. In order to ensure a good seal against engine bay heat - it also has a flexible rubber edging around the opening which presses against the filter housings creating the desired seal yet allowing the housing to move with the engine. Since this was designed to support high power builds, we found that the stock openings in the slam panel could cause a restriction at high flow demand. So we lifted the top surface of the duct and created an opening above the slam panel which is able to draw in cold air from behind the hood shut. This extra opening is equivalent to a hole with a diameter of over 7\" and completely derestricts the stock cold air feed. The stage 3 duct was designed to have the maximum internal volume possible within the given geometry of the engine bay. They tested a MK8 Golf R in stock form and also with a Tuning Box. Tests were done on the same day back to back with the stock airbox tested first and then the Eventuri fitted. No other changes were made to the car. The first graph shows the results using a stock map. As can be seen, there is a measurable gain throughout the RPM range of up to 12hp. This gain even on a stock car is noticeable on the road with better throttle response and quicker acceleration. The second graph shows results when using a tuning box which increases the flow demand from the intake system. The tuning box was used for both the stock airbox and the Eventuri intake without any changes between the tests. With a higher flow demand, the stock airbox presents a higher restriction to the turbo as can be seen by the significant gain achieved with the Eventuri fitted. We now have higher gains across the RPM range of up to 20hp and 30Nm, which is even more noticeable on the road. No other changes were made to the car. The first graph shows the results using a stock map. As can be seen, there is a measurable gain throughout the RPM range of up to 12hp. This gain even on a stock car is noticeable on the road with better throttle response and quicker acceleration. The second graph shows results when using a tuning box which increases the flow demand from the intake system. The tuning box was used for both the stock airbox and the Eventuri intake without any changes between the tests. With a higher flow demand, the stock airbox presents a higher restriction to the turbo as can be seen by the significant gain achieved with the Eventuri fitted. We now have higher gains across the RPM range of up to 20hp and 30Nm, which is even more noticeable on the road. Each component has been designed to provide the turbo with a smooth and free flowing path. The intake tube has an internal diameter of 103mm or just over 4″ and has a smooth curvature from the filter housing all the way to the turbo inlet. The filter itself has been specifically designed for this intake and has a huge outer diameter of 210mm or 8.3″ with a filtration surface area of over 130,000mm^2. The patented Venturi housing has been designed to provide the maximum internal volume possible for the RS3 engine bay space available and provides laminar flow to the turbo tube. Finally the duct seals the filter opening to the front slam panel but is not restricted by just the stock entry feed. The dyno results show a consistent gain throughout a large part of the RPM range which can be attributed to the turbos reaching peak boost earlier and with a lower wastegate duty cycle due to the higher efficiency of the intake system.
